Appendix A - LDAP: Comparison & Searching Information

The following notes may be useful when designing LDAP systems or client interfaces.

String Comparisons

When comparing strings DirectoryString, IA5String, PrintableString the following rules are used:

1. leading and trailing whitespace is removed

2. multiple whitespace is eliminated and replaced with a single whitespace

3. for searches using form `= an approx index is required.

4. for searches using form <= or >= an attribute ORDERING rule is required. Most attributes do not have it defined.
